Mario Buatta’s Family Tree
This morning I was browsing his latest book (titled above) and found this quote. I love it! The attached photo from the book shows his sense of humor and the fact that he didn’t take himself too seriously.
“When I give a talk, I come out on the stage—wearing a wig—and announce its title, “If you can’t hide it, decorate it.” I drop the wig on the floor which always makes the audience laugh. I then say I come from a family of dogs, who all had a lot more hair than I did.”
The first few paragraphs from the book are:
When I was a little boy, my mother said to me, “Piccolo Mario, what do you want to be when you grow up? I shrugged. “I don’t know—I don’t want to play the vilin like Poppa.”
“Maybe you should be an actor because you like to be on stage,” my brother said.
“Maybe you should be a psychiatrist because you’re so crazy,” my father said. “Perhaps you should be a lawyer because you have such a big mouth.”
So I combined all three to become an interior decorator—an actor to convince my clients I liked their existing furniture, a psychiatrist to figure out what they like and don’t like, and a lawyer to collect the bills!
Again, I love his self-deprecating sense of humor and the fact that his ego will allow him that luxury.
